For a decade, VS Code has been one of the most successful open-source projects on GitHub. Millions of developers choose it partly because they can trust an open codebase. When AI became core to the coding experience, VS Code faced a choice: keep AI features proprietary to protect competitive advantage, or bring them into the open.

They chose to open source. And that decision tells you something important about where the AI developer tools market is headed.

The GitHub Copilot Chat extension—the core of agent mode, chat, and next-edit suggestions—is now open source under the MIT license. The refactor into VS Code core is coming. This isn’t a marketing move. It’s a genuine reset of development principles for a critical new layer of the platform.

Why LLMs Got Good Enough to Open Source

The initial reasoning was pragmatic. Over the past year, three shifts made open-source AI features viable:

LLMs improved dramatically. “Secret sauce” prompt engineering used to be the moat. Not anymore. Claude Sonnet, GPT-4, GPT-5—these models are capable enough that clever prompts matter far less than picking the right model and giving it the right context.

UI patterns converged. Every editor—VS Code, JetBrains, Neovim, even web editors—settled on similar UX for AI chat, inline suggestions, and agent mode. Those patterns are no longer proprietary advantages. They’re table stakes. Open-sourcing them lets the community refine and extend them faster than any single vendor.

Ecosystem exploded. There are now hundreds of open-source AI tools, MCP servers, and VS Code extensions. VS Code can’t maintain integrations with all of them. Open source removes that burden—extension authors can study the Copilot Chat codebase to debug their own extensions. The community finds bugs faster.

The Transparency Win: See What Data You’re Sending

Here’s the win that shouldn’t be underrated—you can now read the code and see exactly what telemetry is collected. That matters.

When proprietary AI editors collect data, you’re trusting a privacy policy. When VS Code open sources, you’re reading the code. You see which tokens are sent to the LLM, which data is logged locally, which telemetry is transmitted. Security researchers can audit. Contributors can challenge data collection that feels invasive.

For teams evaluating whether to deploy an AI-assisted editor to developers, this transparency is the difference between “we have to trust them” and “we can verify it ourselves.”

A Practical Implication: Faster Security Fixes

Malicious actors target AI developer tools. When vulnerabilities happen, closed-source tools move slowly—vendors patch, release, users update, hopefully before exploit-in-the-wild.

Open source changes the timeline. “Throughout VS Code’s history as OSS, community issues and PRs have helped us find and fix security issues quickly,” the team notes. An indirect injection attack, a prompt injection vector, a data leak risk—the community sees it, reports it, patches are public, and the whole ecosystem hardens.

Practical Angle: Building on the Codebase

The open-source Copilot Chat extension includes:

  • System prompts you can study (and improve)
  • Implementation details for agent mode, chat, and inline suggestions
  • Prompt test infrastructure for verifying behavior changes
  • Full telemetry schema

A .NET developer can now:

  1. Fork and customize prompts for your coding standards or tech stack
  2. Contribute improvements that benefit everyone
  3. Build extensions on top of Copilot Chat, knowing exactly how it works internally
  4. Run locally if your organization has data residency requirements

The Caveat: Open Source Doesn’t Mean Unmaintained

This is a hard truth. Open sourcing is a starting point, not a finish line. The VS Code team is committing to:

  • Active maintenance and security updates
  • Clear contribution guidelines
  • Review capacity for PRs (which is the real bottleneck)

But they’re also hoping the community steps up. Some features might move slower than in a closed-source model because consensus takes time. Some experimental ideas won’t land because the team can’t justify the maintenance burden.

If you’re planning to fork and customize heavily, understand that you’re also taking on maintenance debt. VS Code’s codebase will evolve, and your fork might diverge.

The Ecosystem Play

Here’s what I think is really happening: VS Code is betting that open source creates a stronger ecosystem than closed source ever could. If the Copilot Chat extension is public, every other editor and agent framework can learn from it. Every researcher can study it. The community attracts talent that proprietary models never could.

That bet assumes the model is good enough to stand on its own without secrecy. And in 2025, with LLMs at this capability level, it is.

For .NET Teams: What This Means

  1. Evaluate locally. You can now clone the repository and run against your own Azure OpenAI or Anthropic instance without sending data to GitHub.
  2. Contribute standards-specific features. If your team uses specific patterns (.NET 9 features, Semantic Kernel, etc.), you can contribute improvements specific to your ecosystem.
  3. Plan for customization. If you need to customize AI behavior for compliance, data residency, or specific coding standards, the open source model makes that feasible.
  4. Watch the refactor. The integration into VS Code core will simplify deployment and guarantees long-term support.

  3. Consider contributing if you have improvements specific to your language or framework.
